When to get a new cap: A Cardinal fan's moral dilemma

Lately I have been faced with a moral dilemma, the question of whether or not I should buy a new Cardinals cap. Both of my authentic Cardinals hats, the Red/Home cap and the Blue/Away cap, are several years old now. The Red is faded and sweat-stained from a few seasons in the sun, the white 'StL' has started to turn slightly yellow, and the wool has shrunk to make the hat a bit tight on my head. The Blue cap is a slightly different situation, it's slightly less faded and encrusted with salt, still fits like a glove, but features the 2004 World Series patch on the side... I sometimes feel like an outcast at Busch Stadium because I never bought one with a 2006 World Series patch on it (a WS the Cards actually won).

Do I just toss aside my old wool caps, full of memories, for one of these new-fangled, moisture-wicking, polyester jobs that the players are wearing now? There's just something about the wool caps that say "baseball." For one, baseball caps were made out of wool for over 100 years, sure they're hot in the summer, they hold in stink and sweat, but it's tradition. They confirm to your head and eventually they become a part of you (just ask Steve Kline). A new bright, polyester cap just doesn't have the same essence in my opinion. Maybe there is no difference, of course there will be a breaking-in period, but maybe it's all the same and I'm making big deal about nothing. Or maybe I'll hold out for another year or so...

I have all kinds of Cardinals caps. Each spring though, I buy a new Sunday cap. I'll wear it all season, mixing in my other styles every now and then. When the season is over, I start wearing it to work, where it gets dirty. By the end of winter it's a wreck. And the cycle goes on.
